How to Identify an Industrial Part Number When the Label Is Worn

The failed component is in your hand, but the label has been through years of heat, coolant, cleaning chemicals, and vibration. Half the characters are readable. The rest are a guess. Ordering a replacement from a guess is how wrong parts show up on the shelf.

1. Clean the label carefully

Choose a cleaning method the component can tolerate. Sometimes a soft dry wipe is all a nameplate needs to become readable. Aggressive solvents can remove the ink entirely on some labels — test a small area first.

2. Photograph under different lighting

Direct light washes out contrast on faded labels. Try side lighting from a flashlight to reveal embossed, stamped, or etched characters. Photograph several angles and keep the originals.

3. Record every readable character exactly

Do not fill in missing characters from memory. Note which characters are confirmed and which are ambiguous. A confirmed partial number plus a confirmed manufacturer is worth more than a full guess.

4. Photograph the whole component

Capture all sides, connectors, terminals, mounting points, and any nearby labels or tags. A distributor familiar with the family can often narrow the model from a good side photograph.

5. Cross-check the documentation

6. Compare an identical component on another machine

If the plant runs multiple lanes, stations, or identical machines, an equivalent component elsewhere may have a readable label. Confirm the component is truly the same before copying its number.

7. Identify the manufacturer and product family first

A confirmed manufacturer plus product family is often enough to bring a distributor or OEM into the conversation. From there, the datasheet or a product photo can confirm the exact model.

8. Contact the OEM, manufacturer, distributor, or integrator

Provide photographs, the machine information, and any characters you can confirm. This is often faster than an online search when the label is truly gone.
